Record Application Numbers as Secondment Wave Launches

Yorkshire’s MedTech ecosystem reaches new milestone with the strongest response yet to our latest funding round.

Yorkshire MedTech has closed its latest funding round with landmark results: a record number of applications and our highest-ever conversion rate from expressions of interest to full submissions.

The surge in both quantity and quality underscores the depth and strength of Yorkshire’s established translational research ecosystem. Proposals spanned a wide array of medical device innovations, from diagnostic technologies, new materials and software as a medical device to name but a few —each representing potential breakthroughs that could transform patient care while strengthening our regional capabilities.

This exceptional response reflects the increasing recognition of our funding pathway, which provides crucial support from market validation through to proof of concept. With decisions within 6 weeks and expert panel feedback to strengthen commercialisation strategies, we’re seeing more researchers ready to take the critical step from lab to impact.

Join Our First Secondment Wave

Building on this momentum, we’re convening our inaugural secondment panel and inviting applications to be part of this first wave—a unique opportunity for academic researchers to gain commercial insight and build breadth of experience in the MedTech sector.

Applications close 23 January 2025.

With the holiday period offering time for reflection, now is the ideal moment to consider how a secondment could enhance your research impact and professional development.

These placements embed university researchers within industry, healthcare organisations, civic partners, or regulatory bodies. The scheme can also facilitate knowledge transfer in the other direction, with industry professionals working alongside university research teams. Whether you’re looking to develop commercialisation skills, understand regulatory pathways, or build collaborative relationships with end-users, this programme facilitates knowledge exchange that accelerates your journey from research to real-world impact.

Who Should Apply?

We’re particularly looking for academic researchers from Yorkshire universities who want to:

  • Gain hands-on commercial experience and industry insight
  • Build collaborative relationships with potential partners or customers
  • Understand regulatory requirements and approval processes
  • Develop skills in translating research into market-ready solutions
  • Broaden their professional network beyond academia

This opportunity is ideal for early career researchers, including PhD students in their write-up period and post-doctoral researchers, as well as more established academics seeking to strengthen their commercialisation expertise.

What We Offer:

  • Up to £12,000 funding support per placement
  • Flexible placements up to 3 months full-time (or part-time equivalent)
  • Support for salary costs, teaching buy-out, travel, and accommodation
  • Connections with host organisations across industry, healthcare, and regulatory sectors
  • As part of the £81m EPSRC PBIAA network of 17 regional innovation hubs, Yorkshire MedTech provides more than funding—we’re building the infrastructure that transforms university research into solutions that benefit patients and healthcare systems.
