Robert Kay

Robert Kay is Professor of Advanced Manufacturing at the University of Leeds and Director of the Institute for Design, Robotics and Manufacturing. With over 25 years of experience in manufacturing research across academia and industry, his work focuses on hybrid additive manufacturing and the translation of academic innovation into real-world applications.

Robert began his career in the electronics manufacturing sector, where his PhD research led to the development of a novel microfabrication process and the creation of the spin-out company MicroStencil Limited. As Chief Technical Officer, he established UK and Singapore-based production lines, forged manufacturing partnerships in Asia, and built a diverse global customer base.

Since joining academia in 2012, Robert’s research has centred on digital fabrication, including 3D printing of medical devices. He leads a range of funded projects spanning fundamental process development to industry-sponsored research, all delivered through collaborative, multidisciplinary teams.

In addition to his university role, Robert is the Chairman and co-found of Hydra Manufacturing where he is continuing his commitment to bridge research and industry to accelerate technological progress. Hydra Manufacturing is a company that is driving the commercialisation of advanced hybrid ceramic 3D printing technologies for high-performance applications such as orthopaedic implants.
